What are Rare Earths elements?

About Rare Earths

Rare earth is a generic term for 17 elements, including 15 elements from lanthanum (atomic number 57) to lutetium (atomic number 71), plus scandium (atomic number 21) and yttrium (atomic number 39). These 17 elements have a similar electronic configuration of atoms and consequently show similar chemical properties. Therefore, it was not possible to separate individual rare earth elements using the traditional precipitation separation method. By using the ion exchange method and solvent extraction method, we have been able to obtain individual pure rare earth elements (REEs) for the first time.
